BANGLADESH LIBERATION ARMED FORCE

Mukti Bahini / Head quarters: Mujibnagar Immediately after start of genocide on March 25, 1971 Bangali members of armed forces, East Pakistan Rifles, Police and Ansars together with patriotic youth built up local resistance, wherever they could. On April 4, high ranking officials of the Armed Forces involved in the resistance movement in the Eastern part met at Teliapara Tea Gardens, Sylhet for planning coordinated actions. The Cabinet Meeting of the Bangladesh Government on July 11, 1971 appointed Col. M. A. G. Osmany as the Commander-in-Chief, Lt. Col. Abdur Rab as Chief of Army Staff and Group Captain A. K. Khandker as Deputy Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Air Force. In this meeting, Bangladesh was divided into Eleven Sectors under the command of the Sector Commanders. The 10th. Sector was directly placed under Commander-in-Chief and included the Naval Commandos and C-in-C’s special force. Sector Commanders basically led the guerrilla warfare; later three regular army brigades were formed. On December 4, 1971 the Joint Command of the Bangladesh Liberation Force and The Eastern Command of the Indian Army was formed which won ultimate victory on December 16, 1971. Col. M. A. G. King of Bollywood entertains Dhaka

All roads led to Army Stadium as the decked out stage was all set to welcome the 'King of Bollywood' Shahrukh Khan on December 10. Countless die-hard fans of the 'Bollywood Badshah' waited with bated breath to catch a glimpse of their favourite 'hero'.
Most of Shahrukh's Bangladeshi fans are seemingly youngsters. Of them the number of female fans might surpass that of men. They had so far watched Khan's charismatic performance on the small screen, and didn't want to miss the opportunity to see him perform live in Dhaka.
The show, titled 'King Khan Live in Dhaka' was organized by Antar Showbiz and Diamond World is the one of the top sponsor of the program.
A team of performers, which included Bollywood, stars Rani Mukerjee, Arjun Rampal and Isha Koppikar joined Khan in the three-hour live performance.
Bangladeshi singer Parvez opened the show. Parvez started with a high-pitched melancholic rock song “E Jibon Hariye Jaye”.
Chairman of Antar Showbiz, Swapan Chowdhury with his wife Nasreen Chowdhury, took the stage and delivered speeches.
A visual presentation featuring Bollywood actress Isha Koppikar was on next. The performance featured dances routines from films “Qayamat” and “Don” (2006).
Arjun Rampal arrived on stage in style -- on a bike. The actor sported a guitar and performed to the song “Rock On” and “Aap Ka Kya Hoga”.
“How is Dhaka? I love you,” Arjun yelled in Bangla. He also said, “Couple of days ago I suffered a back injury, but I had to come to Dhaka. I didn't want to disappoint you all.”
The ravishing Bengali belle Rani Mukerjee danced to a medley of some hit songs from her films, including “Saathia”, “Hum Tum” and “Shava Shava”.
Dazzling the audience with her cordial smile and girl-next-door charm, Rani spoke to the audience in Bangla and said, “You folks have been supporting me since the beginning of my career. I want your love and support more in the days ahead, so that I deliver better performances.”
Silence prevailed as footage of Shahrukh Khan went on the screen. Khan with his entourage of performers appeared on stage at 8:47pm. The mega-star performed a segue of hits -- “Love Mera Hit Hit”, “Dard-e Disco” and “Abhi Na Jao Chhor Kar.”
Audiences were chanting “Shahrukh”, “Shahrukh” as he disappeared from stage, leaving them craving for more of the star.
Wearing a white shirt, Khan appeared again on stage after a while and said, “Ami Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman-er deshey Bharatbarsho thekey onek onek bhalobasha aar shubhechcha boye enechhi.”
“I've heard of Kazi Nazrul Islam, Jasimuddin. I love Runajee's (Runa Laila) music. That's why I'm in Dhaka,” he added.
As per Khan's request, a couple from the audience joined Khan on stage and interacted with him.
Khan also delivered dialogues from his films “Devdas” and “Baazigar” on the show.
The highlight of the night was a duet by Rani Mukerji and Shahrukh Khan. The performance included “Tujhey Dekha Tho Ye Jana Sanam”, “Tum Paas Aaye”, “Tawba Tumharey Ye Isharey”, “Koi Mil Gaya” and “Mitwa”.
Later, all the artistes performed to the song “Om Shanti Om.” A rendition by Neeraj Shridhar wrapped up the show.

Though several press conferences and features published in newspapers claimed that Shahrukh Khan will vote, and inspire his fans to vote, for the Sundarbans (largest mangrove forest in the world) to be included in the Natural Wonders List, he didn't do so.

আজ বৃহস্পতিবার ঢাকায় আসছেন শাহরুখ খান। কাল শুক্রবার আর্মি স্টেডিয়ামে কিং খান লাইভ ইন ঢাকা অনুষ্ঠানে অংশ নেবেন তিনি। বিশেষ বিমানে তাঁর সঙ্গে আসছেন স্ত্রী গৌরী খান, দুই সন্তান আরিয়ান ও সুহানা, বলিউড তারকা রানী মুখার্জি, ইশা কোপিকার, অর্জুন রামপাল, শেফালি জরিওয়ালা, গণেশ হেজ ও নিরাজ শ্রীধর। অনুষ্ঠানে বাংলাদেশ থেকে অংশ নিচ্ছেন কুমার বিশ্বজিৎ ও প্রান্তর। ভারতের মুম্বাই থেকে আরও আসছে ৪৮ জনের একটি নাচের দল।
কিং খান লাইভ ইন ঢাকা অনুষ্ঠানের আয়োজক প্রতিষ্ঠান অন্তর শোবিজের চেয়ারম্যান স্বপন চৌধুরী জানিয়েছেন, নিরাপত্তার স্বার্থে শাহরুখ ও তাঁর সঙ্গীদের আসার সময়টি গোপন রাখা হচ্ছে।
হজরত শাহজালাল আন্তর্জাতিক বিমানবন্দর থেকে শাহরুখ ও তাঁর সঙ্গীদের নিয়ে যাওয়া হবে র্যাডিসন হোটেলে। এরই মধ্যে তাঁদের জন্য ৮০টি কক্ষ বরাদ্দ রাখা হয়েছে।
এদিকে শাহরুখ ও তাঁর সঙ্গীদের নিরাপত্তার জন্য দায়িত্বপ্রাপ্ত সেনাবাহিনী, বিমানবাহিনী, র্যাব ও এলিট ফোর্সের ঊর্ধ্বতন কর্মকর্তারা জানান, তাঁরা এরই মধ্যে শাহরুখ ও তাঁর সঙ্গী এবং কিং খান লাইভ ইন ঢাকা অনুষ্ঠানের নিরাপত্তার জন্য সব প্রস্তুতি চূড়ান্ত করেছেন।
এদিকে শাহরুখের বন্ধু ও চলচ্চিত্রনির্মাতা করণ জোহর গতকাল বুধবার নিজের টুইটারে লেখা এক বার্তায় জানিয়েছেন, কফি উইথ করণ অনুষ্ঠানে এবার তিনি শাহরুখকে এককভাবে আমন্ত্রণ জানিয়েছেন। গত সোমবার ওই অনুষ্ঠানের শুটিং শেষ হয়েছে। ধারণা করা হচ্ছে, আজ বিকেলের যেকোনো সময় ঢাকার উদ্দেশে রওনা দেবেন শাহরুখ।

হীরা আমার কাচকাটা হীরা

পৃথিবীতে যত পদার্থ আছে, তার মধ্যে সবচেয়ে শক্ত নাকি হীরা। দামটাও তার সে রকম। অবশ্য শুধু অর্থমূল্যই নয়, হীরার গায়ে লেগে আছে সৌন্দর্য আর আভিজাত্যের অন্য রকম ছোঁয়া। তার সঙ্গে ইদানীং আবার যোগ হয়েছে হাল ফ্যাশনের তকমা। তাই যারা একটু ফ্যাশন-সচেতন, একটু শৌখিন, হীরার জয়জয়কার তাদের মুখে মুখে ঘুরছে।
স্বাভাবিকভাবেই তরুণ প্রজন্মের কাছে হীরার কদরটা অন্য রকম। সে কথাটাই বললেন বসুন্ধরা সিটিতে গয়না কিনতে আসা সালমা আফরোজ, ‘আমার বয়সী যারা, মানে যারা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে সবে পাস করে বেরোল, গয়না কেনার ক্ষেত্রে তাদের প্রথম পছন্দটাই থাকে ডায়মন্ড। আমার কানের দুলজোড়া সেই ফার্স্ট ইয়ারে থাকতে কেনা, দুলটা অবশ্য রুপার, কিন্তু দুটোতেই ছোট ছোট চারটা হীরা বসানো আছে। সেই জন্য এর কদরটা সোনার দুলের চেয়েও বেশি।’
সালমার সঙ্গে ছিলেন মা দিলারা আলম, তিনিও সায় দিলেন মেয়ের কথায়, ‘আমাদের সময় যেমন সোনার গয়নার জন্য মেয়েরা পাগল ছিল, এখন দেখি আমার দুই মেয়েই হীরার দুল পরে। ছোটটা পাতলা একটা চেনের সঙ্গে ছোট ছোট হীরা বসানো লকেটও পরে। আর ওর জন্য আজকে এ রকম একটা কিনতে এলাম।’
গুলশান আড়ংয়ের গয়নার কাউন্টারের সামনে দেখা হয়ে গেল ইফফাত শারমিনের সঙ্গে। এই তরুণীও বললেন হীরার গয়নার প্রতি তাঁর আকর্ষণের কথা, ‘এখন ভারী গয়নার চেয়ে হালকা গয়না পরাটাই বেশি ফ্যাশনেবল। তাই নোজ পিন, ব্রেসলেট, আংটি—এগুলো ছোটখাটো হলেই বেশি ভালো হয়। কিন্তু একেবারে সিম্পল হলেও দেখতে যাতে একটু অন্য রকম লাগে, সে জন্য তাতে একটা মোটামুটি আকারের হীরা থাকলে ভালো দেখায়।’
তরুণ প্রজন্মের হীরার গয়নার প্রতি এই ঝোঁকটা বাড়ার কারণেই কিন্তু অতি অল্প সময়ের মধ্যে নগরে বেশ কিছু গয়নার দোকান তৈরি হয়ে গেছে। গুলশান-২ নম্বরের পিংক সিটির চতুর্থ তলার এক প্রান্তে অবস্থিত ফিওর সে রকমই একটা দোকান। ফিওরের সংগ্রহে রয়েছে ভিন্ন ভিন্ন নকশা আর দৃষ্টিনন্দন শৈলীর হীরার গয়না। এখানকার সেলস এক্সিকিউটিভ দীপক কর্মকার বললেন, ‘টিন এজারদের ডায়মন্ড অরনামেন্টসের প্রতি আগ্রহটা বেশি। তার কারণ, এগুলো হালকা হয়, কিন্তু এর উজ্জ্বলতাটা অন্য রকম। ছোট হলেও হীরার আভিজাত্যটা অন্য রকম। তা ছাড়া হাল ফ্যাশনের সঙ্গে একেবারে খাপে খাপ মিলে যায়।’
শুধু মেয়েদের কথা বললে কিন্তু ভুল হবে। আজকালকার ছেলেরাও হীরার আংটি, লকেট কিংবা কানের দুল পরতে আগ্রহী। পিংক সিটির চতুর্থ তলারই আরেকটি দোকান জেমস ওয়ার্ল্ডে হীরার আংটি কিনতে এসেছিলেন ব্রায়ান। এত কিছু থাকতে হীরার গয়না কেন, জানতে চাইলে তিনি জবাব দিলেন, ‘তিনটা কারণ—প্রথমত, এটি সহজে নষ্ট হয় না; দ্বিতীয়ত, খাঁটি হীরার রিসেল ভ্যালু সব সময়ই ভালো; তৃতীয়ত, ঠকার আশঙ্কা কম।’ জেমস ওয়ার্ল্ডের ব্যবস্থাপক সোহাগ জানালেন, ছেলেরাও আজকাল হীরার ব্রেসলেট কিংবা আংটি, লকেট পরতে স্বাচ্ছন্দ্য বোধ করে।
তবে শুধু তরুণ প্রজন্ম কিংবা উচ্চবিত্ত নয়, হীরার গয়নাকে আরও বেশি সহজলভ্য করার একটা চেষ্টাও এ ধরনের প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলোর। গুলশান এভিনিউয়ের ডায়মন্ড ওয়ার্ল্ডের কো-অর্ডিনেটর আশফাকুল হাসান বললেন সে রকমটাই, ‘আমাদের লক্ষ্যই হচ্ছে হীরার গয়নাটাকে সব মানুষের সাধ্যের মধ্যে নিয়ে আসা। শুধু যেন উচ্চবিত্তের জন্য না হয়, শুধু যেন অভিজাত মানুষের মধ্যে আটকে না থাকে। তাই আমরা ছোট হীরার গয়নাটা বেশি রাখি। কেননা, ক্রেতাদেরও আগ্রহটা একটু কম দামের গয়নার দিকেই বেশি। তা ছাড়া আমরা মনে করি, যে পরিমাণ টাকা লাগে একটা সোনার গয়নায়, তার চেয়ে অনেক কমে হীরার গয়না পাওয়া সম্ভব।’
কিন্তু কেনার সময় সাধারণ লোকে বুঝবে কী করে, কোনটা খাঁটি হীরা কিংবা এর দাম কত? সে কথার জবাবে ফিওরের দীপক কর্মকার বললেন, ‘চারটা জিনিসের ওপর হীরার দাম ওঠানামা করে। আমরা বলি চারটা সি। প্রথমত, কাট। হীরার কয়েক রকমের কাট আছে। এর মধ্যে ব্রিলিয়ান্ট কাট বা বেলজিয়াম কাট হলে দাম বেশি হবে। দ্বিতীয়ত, ক্ল্যারিটি। অর্থাৎ, হীরা যত স্বচ্ছ হবে, তার দাম তত বেশি হবে। তৃতীয়ত, কালার বা রং। হীরার রঙের ওপর এর দাম ওঠানামা করে। রং যত সাদা, দামও ততটা বেশি। চতুর্থত, ক্যারেট বা ওজন। ক্যারেট যত বাড়বে, দামও তত বাড়বে। আর খাঁটি হীরা চেনাটা এখন আর খুব কঠিন কিছু নয়। ডায়মন্ড টেস্টার মেশিন জুয়েলারিগুলোতে থাকে। সেটা দিয়ে পরীক্ষা করিয়ে নেওয়া যায়। আর আমরা বিক্রি করার সময় ক্রেতা চাইলে এর সার্টিফিকেট এবং নিশ্চয়তা দিতে পারি।’

আগামী ৯ ডিসেম্বর ঢাকায় আসছেন বলিউড অভিনেতা শাহরুখ খান। জানা গেছে, এ সময় তাঁর সঙ্গে থাকছেন স্ত্রী গৌরী খান এবং দুই সন্তান আরিয়ান ও সুহানা। এরই মধ্যে শাহরুখ ও তাঁর পরিবারের জন্য উপহারসামগ্রীর তালিকা তৈরি করেছেন আয়োজকেরা।
কিং খান লাইভ ইন ঢাকা অনুষ্ঠানের আয়োজক প্রতিষ্ঠান অন্তর শোবিজের চেয়ারম্যান স্বপন চৌধুরী জানান, শাহরুখের স্ত্রী গৌরীকে বাংলাদেশের জামদানি ও টাঙ্গাইল শাড়ি উপহার দেওয়া হবে। আর শাহরুখের জন্য আড়ং ও দেশি দশ থেকে বিভিন্ন উপহার দেওয়া হবে। এই তালিকায় আছে পাঞ্জাবি, শেরওয়ানি, লুঙ্গিসহ আরও কিছু। এ ছাড়া শাহরুখের দুই সন্তান আরিয়ান ও সুহানার জন্যও থাকবে দেশীয় উপকরণে তৈরি নানা উপহার।
খাবারের প্রসঙ্গে তিনি জানান, শাহরুখ ও তাঁর সঙ্গে আসা অতিথিদের জন্য থাকবে এ দেশীয় সব খাবার।

বঙ্গবন্ধু আন্তর্জাতিক সম্মেলন কেন্দ্রে ঢুকতেই ধাক্কা। হল অব ফেমের বদলে মূল মঞ্চ এর প্রবেশপথে। আর দর্শকদের জন্য বসার ব্যবস্থা করা হয়েছে গাড়ি রাখার জায়গাটায়।শামিয়ানা আর বিজ্ঞাপনের ব্যানারে ঢাকা পুরো এলাকার সাজসজ্জাই অন্য রকম।
বাংলাদেশ তৈরি পোশাক প্রস্তুত ও রপ্তানিকারক সমিতির (বিজিএমইএ) বার্ষিক আয়োজনে অনুষ্ঠিত হলো ‘বাটেক্সপো নাইট-২০১০’। ২৫ নভেম্বর ছিল এর উদ্বোধনী।
শুরুতেই মঞ্চের পেছন থেকে ভেসে এল অচেনা কণ্ঠস্বর। ঘোষণা দিলেন মঞ্চে আসবেন সংগীতশিল্পী মোনালি ঠাকুর। উপস্থাপিকার নাম তখনো অজানা। মোনালি শুরু করলেন রেস সিনেমার গান ‘জারা জারা টাচ মি’। এরপর আরও নানা জনপ্রিয় গান। ফাঁকে ফাঁকে শ্রোতা-দর্শকদের সঙ্গে বাংলায় নিজের অনুভূতিও ভাগাভাগি করে নিলেন কলকাতার এই মেয়ে। গাইলেন বাংলা গান।
উপস্থাপিকা শ্বেতা তিওয়ারি মঞ্চে ডাকলেন ‘ইয়া আলি’খ্যাত গায়ক জুবিন গার্গ। শুরু করলেন এ গানটি দিয়েই। বাংলা হিন্দি মিলিয়ে আরও বেশ কয়েকটি গান গেয়ে মঞ্চ থেকে নামলেন।
এরপর এলেন নাচ বালিয়েখ্যাত জুটি আমির-সানজিদা। নানা গানের সঙ্গে দুর্দান্ত নাচে দর্শক ততক্ষণে মন্ত্রমুগ্ধ। কৃষ্ণার সঙ্গে নাচলেন বলিউডের আইটেম গার্ল কাশ্মীরা শাহ। মানব-শ্বেতা জুটিও নাচলেন। আলো-আঁধারির খেলায় বঙ্গবন্ধু আন্তর্জাতিক সম্মেলন কেন্দ্রে তখন অন্য পরিবেশ।
এই নাচ-গানের চমকটা ছিল যে আয়োজনকে কেন্দ্র করে, তা ফ্যাশন শো। বাংলাদেশে তৈরি পোশাকগুলো তুলে ধরাই ছিল বাটেক্সপো নাইটের মূল উদ্দেশ্য। লাল, কালো ও সাদা—তিনটি রঙে নানা রকম পোশাক পরে মঞ্চে হাঁটেন মডেলরা। শুরুটা করে ফারদিন ও রুমা। তাঁদের মনোমুগ্ধকর পরিবেশনার পর মঞ্চে হাঁটলেন অন্যান্য মডেল। লুনার কোরিওগ্রাফিতে ফ্যাশন শোতে অংশ নেন টুম্পা, রুহি, মৌসহ অনেকে। পোশাকের সঙ্গে চোখ ধাঁধানো সব গয়না সরবরাহ করেছে ডায়মন্ড ওয়ার্ল্ড।
ক্রেতাদের মন কাড়তে এই আয়োজন পুরোপুরি সফল, তার প্রমাণও মিলেছে। দুই দিনের এই আয়োজনের পর বিজিএমইএ পেয়েছে ৫৬ কোটি টাকার পোশাকের ফরমায়েশ।
ঝলমলে এ আয়োজনে ছিল রুশ অ্যাক্রোব্যাট দলের চমৎকার পরিবেশনা।

Bollywood Superstar Shahrukh Khan will cast vote for the Sundarbans to make it one of the 'New Natural Seven Wonders'.
His casting will be broadcasted on private TV channel Boishakhi TV, said chairman of Antar Showbiz Swapan Chowdhury at a press conference organised jointly by Ontor Showbiz and Boishakhi TV at a city hotel.
Khan known as 'King Khan' is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on December 9, 2010. The show will be staged on December 10 and the megastar will go back the following day.

diamonds has sold for a record-breaking $46 million (£29m)

One of the world's rarest diamonds has sold for a record-breaking $46 million (£29m), the highest price ever paid for a jewel.

The 24.78-carat "fancy intense pink" diamond was sold to a well-known British dealer at an auction in Geneva.
Bidding at the Sotheby's auction was said to be fierce, and the sale surpassed expectations.
Last sold by a New York jeweller 60 years ago, the gem has been kept in a private collection ever since.
The diamond had been expected to command at least £625,000 per carat.
The previous record for a jewel at auction was set by a blue 35.56 carat diamond which sold for £15.2m at auction in 2008.
"This is the highest price ever bid for a jewel at auction," said David Bennett, the head of Sotheby's jewellery division, as the auction room in Geneva's luxury Beau Rivage hotel broke into applause.
It was bought by top diamond trader Laurence Graff, who bid by telephone, Sotheby's said.
'Alluring sparkle' The auction house said it sold jewels worth a total of £66m - a world record for a single sale.

Bangladesh eyes global diamond market

Bangladesh has the potential to grab a significant market share of the global diamond industry as the country has cheap labour and a large pool of jewellery artisans, both essential for the diamond cutting industry , said Mr. Dilip Kumar Agarwal, Managing Director of Diamond World Ltd.
Bangladesh approved an international agreement in 2005 that regulates trade in rough diamond exports in a bid to emerge as a new player in the lucrative labour-intensive industry.

‘We’re confident that joining the scheme will make Bangladesh a player in the diamond cutting business since Bangladesh offers the cheapest labour,’ said Sufiya Begum, a deputy director of the Export Promotion Bureau.

Sufiya said Brilliant Diamond, a private company, had already set up a diamond cutting and polishing operation and was waiting for approval for export.

‘We expect more industries to follow as Bangladesh offers opportunities similar to that of India, which is the leader in cut diamond exports,’ she added.

‘This year, our target is to export diamonds worth $50 million,’ said Anwar Hussain, chairman of Brilliant Diamond.

India is the world’s biggest cut and polished diamond exporter, which earned $11.2 billion from this segment last year, according to the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) of India.

The international agreement is aimed at preventing the sale of so-called conflict diamonds that are sold to finance wars, particularly in West Africa. It was agreed in the South African town of Kimberley in November 2002 and came into effect in August 2003.

Gold in Egypt 3000 BC
